spine surgery Flashcards
principle goals of spine surgery
nerve decompression, stabilization of unstable segments, restoration of normal spine balance in the coronal and sagittal planes
sagittal vertical axis
lateral view from C7. line should go through posterior body of S1 and the posterior sacrum. Increased SVA means patient is leaning forward.
what factors affect sagittal balance
head position, cervical lordosis, thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis, pelvic incidence, femoral-sacral angle
what imaging can be used to predict other balance abnormalities?
T1 tilt angle
what causes osteoporotic compression fractures?
poor calcium intake, smoking, steroids, inactivity, genetics
when is osteoporosis considered severe?
when bone is no longer strong enough to withstand the stresses of everyday life
what is most common fracture?
vertebral body compression fracture
long term consequences of VCF
impaired function, Decreased qol, pulmonary disorders, mortality
vertebroplasty
percutaneous bone cement injection
why was vertebrosplasty designed? shortcomings?
to stabilize painful VCFs.
shortcomings: risk of filler leaks, freezes spinal deformity
