What is the mechanism of action verapamil?

A

calcium channel blocker
- blocks L type calcium channels > slows Ca2+ influx > prolongs plateau (refractory) phase in myocytes
- in SA nose prolongs depolarisation by blocking L type Ca2+ channels

What are the adverse effects of verapamil?

A

Bradycardia
Heart block
Constipation
Headaches + dizziness

  • Beta blockers - slows heart rate to much + increases risk of heart block
  • Other antihypertensives or antiarrhythmics
  • Statins - increases [plasma]
