Variation, Genetics Flashcards
What is discrete variation?
- members of a species decided into two or more distinct groups
- ONE OR THE OTHER
- eg ability to roll tongue or not
What is continuous variation?
- variation which is smooth and continuous
- does NOT fall into distinct groups
- eg body mass, hand span
What is polygenic inheritance?
Characteristics that are controlled by the alleles of SEVERAL genes
What are alleles?
Different forms of the same gene
Different forms of the same gene are?
ALLELES!
What is the phenotype?
The physical appearance
What is the genotype?
The COMBINATION of alleles in a gene pair
What are genes part of?
Chromosomes
What is the dominant gene?
The allele that will ALWAYS show in the phenotype and masks a recessive allele
What is the allele that will ALWAYS show in the phenotype?
Dominant
What is the recessive allele?
The allele that will be masked by the dominan gene and only expressed in the phenotype when paired with another recessive allele
What is homozygous?
Two alleles that are the same
What is true breeding?
Two alleles that are the same (homo)
What is heterozygous?
Two alleles that are different
What are the two types of variation?
Discrete and continuous
