Animal Transport UNIT 2 Flashcards
What does plasma do?
Carries dissolved food from small intestine to body cells
•also carries Co2 from body cells back to lungs
What combines w/ haemoglobin to become oxyhemoglobin?
Oxygen
At body cells what happened to the oxyhaemoglobin?
Releases its oxygen to become haemoglobin again
What diffuse from the BLOOD CAPILLARIES to the CELLS
Oxygen and glucose
What diffuse from the CELLS to the BLOOD CAPILLARIES
CO2 and waste
What does a capillary network have?
Large surface area
Lining is one cell thick (to allow rapid diffusion)
How many valves does the heart have?
4
What do the valves do?
Ensures that the blood flows in one direction only through the heart
What side carries the oxygenated blood of the heart?
Left side
Which side carries DE oxygenated blood in the heart?
Right
Pathway of blood starting from aorta?
Aorta-lungs-vena cava-right atrium-right ventricle- pulmonary artery- lungs-pulmonary vein- left atrium-left ventricle-aorta
What is the function of the artery?
To carry the blood AWAY from the heart
What features does the artery have?
- thick muscular wall
- narrow channel
- carry blood under HIGH pressure
What is the function of the capillary?
Exchange of materials.
Capillaries form networks at organs and tissues
What is the feature of the capillary?
1 cell thick (walls)
•large surface area
