Hormones Flashcards
What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers released from glands (endoerine glands)
What do hormones do?
They travel in the bloodstream to specific target issues to alter their activity or bloodstream
What are hormones made of?
Protein
What is the feature of a hormone?
They are specific to receptors on the surface of a particular tissue
The concentration of glucose in the blood is controlled by which two hormones?
Insulin and glucagon
What to Insulin and glucagon to together?
They work together to maintain homeostasis (to keep the blood glucose concentration at a constant steady level)
Where is insulin released from?
The pancreas
Where does insulin travel in?
The blood to receptors on the surface of the cells
What does the insulin do?
Stimulates the uptake of glucose from the blood.
It may also act on the liver to encourage like the storage of glucose as glycogen
What is glucagon?
A hormone released from the pancreas
What does glucagon do?
Breaks stores of glycogen in the liver and the muscle into glucose which is released into the blood to raise the concentration of glucose
What is diabetes?
The failure of insulin and glucagon to maintain homeostasis by regulating blood glucose concentration results
