Photosynthesis Flashcards
What do plants do through photosynthesis?
Make their own food.
What happens in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll in plant cells absorbs light energy to change carbon dioxide and water into glucose and the by product oxygen.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water —(light energy and chlorophyll)—> glucose + oxygen
What is: Carbon dioxide + water —(light energy and chlorophyll)—> glucose + oxygen
The equation for photosynthesis.
Describe in detail what happens during photosynthesis?
The plant takes in CARBON DIOXIDE from the air through small pores in it’s leaves, and WATER from the soil through it’s roots. The LIGHT ENERGY is used to make them join together to form GLUCOSE.
Where does photosynthesis take place?
Inside the chloroplast
What is stage 1 of photosynthesis?
Light Reactions
What happens to the light energy from the sun that is trapped by chlorophyll in the chloroplasts during photosynthesis?
Some is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.
Some is converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP.
What are both needed for the 2nd stage of photosynthesis? (Carbon fixation)
The hydrogen and the ATP are both needed.
What does Carbon fixation use?
Hydrogen and ATP produced by the light reactions.
Carbon dioxide taken in from the air. (combined to produce glucose)
Describe the transfer of energy from light arriving at the leaf to the formation of sugar.
Light energy is trapped by chlorophyll
Light energy is converted into chemical energy in ATP
ATP goes from stage 1 to stage 2
Chemical energy is converted into sugar.
What are 3 things glucose can be used for?
Respiration (energy for the plant)
Stored as starch (storage carbohydrate)
Converted into cellulose (structural carbohydrate)
What is limiting factor?
The factor in short supply controls how quickly photosynthesis occurs and so limits the rate.
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, temperature.
