Transport UNIT 2 Flashcards
The evaporation of water through the stomata is what process?
TRANSPIRATION
Plants need water for?
- photosynthesis
* transporting material
How does water enter the plant?
Via the roots and travels up the stem to the leaves
Water moves from cell to cell in the leaf by what?
Osmosis
What is water used by for photosynthesis?
Mesophyll
Water can also be lost from?
The leaf by evaporation through tiny pores called STOMATA
What are stomata?
Tiny pores
What do the stomata do?
Open during the day to allow GAS EXCHANGE for photosynthesis
•this allows water to be lost by evaporation from the leaf
What do the guard cells do?
They control opening and closing of the stomata
•they take in water by osmosis, swell and become TURGID, opening the pore
What happens when the guard cells lose water?
They shrink an then the pore closes
How does water enter?
Via the roots
How do the roots adapt to let water enter?
They have root hair cells
What do the root hair cells do?
Water moves into the root hairs
•the surface area is increased for absorption
How is the water moved?
Into the root hairs
Through the root cells
And into the xylem vessels by osmosis
What is transported through the stem in xylem?
Water and minerals
