Variation and Classification - Three-Domain System Flashcards
1
Q
what does the kingdom Prokaryotae contain
A
all organisms that do not have a nucleus
2
Q
how did the three-domain system come about
A
- prokaryotes were once all grouped together but labelled either eubacteria or archaebacteria
- after studying the genes that code for RNA and observable features of organisms, Woese proposed a new system, splitting the group in half
3
Q
what is the three domain system
A
- bacteria
- archaea
- eukarya
4
Q
where are domains in the hierarchy of taxa
A
at the top
5
Q
how are bacteria different from archaea
A
they have:
- a different cell membrane structure
- different enzymes for building RNA
- no proteins bound to their genetic material
- different RNA/DNA replication mechanism
6
Q
how are archaea actually more similar to eukaryotes
A
- similar enzymes for building RNA
- similar mechanisms for DNA replication
- produce some proteins that bind to their DNA
