Q

why are water molecules polar

A

the oxygen atom attracts the electrons in the covalent bond, leaving it slightly negatively charged and the hydrogen atoms slightly positively charged

Q

explain the liquid property of water

A

water is a liquid at room temperature as the molecules are held together by the many weak hydrogen bonds

Q

why is liquid an important property of water

A

water can:
provide an aquatic habitat for organisms
form a major component of tissues
provide a medium for chemical reactions
provide an effective transport medium

Q

explain why solid water is less dense than liquid water

A

as temperature falls, molecules have less kinetic energy. this allows more hydrogen bonds to form and they break less easily.
as the liquid becomes solid, a semi crystalline structure forms. the bonds hold the water molecules slightly further apart than in liquid state

Q

why is ice being less dense than water important

A

ice forms at the surface as water freezes and float, so prevents entire bodies of water from being frozen. the ice on the surface insulates the rest of the water against further temperature drops

Q

explain the cohesion property of water

A

water molecules are attracted to each other due to their polarity.

10
Q

why is cohesion important

A

water molecules are more strongly attracted to each other than they are to air, this cohesion causes surface tension.
this is what causes water droplets to form and allows pond skaters to inhabit the surface of bodies of water.
cohesive forces help to allow columns of water to move up xylem vessels

Q

explain adhesion

A

water molecules are attracted to other, polar substances. water is adhesive to glass, for example

Q

explain the importance of adhesion

A

forces of adhesion between water molecules and lignin in xylem vessels help with the transpiration stream

Q

explain why water is a good solvent

A

ionic compounds and polar molecules will dissolve in water. the solute has slightly +ve and -ve parts. water molecules (polar) cluster around the slightly charged parts of the solute which helps to keep the solute molecules apart.
at this point they dissolve, and a solution is formed

14
Q

why is water being a good solvent useful

A

once in solution, molecules move around and react with other molecules, which is the basis of metabolic reactions, additionally, polar molecules and ions can be transported around living things, dissolved in water

Q

why does salt dissolve in water

A

salt is an ionic compound. the water molecules surround the ions, keeping them apart and dissolved. water is polar, so the +ve hydrogen atoms face cl- ions and -ve oxygen atoms face na+ ions

16
Q

why does sugar dissolve in water

A

sugar has a large number of hydroxyl groups (OH)
the uneven distribution of charge between the oxygen and hydrogen atom creates a slightly positive and negative area (so sugar is a polar solute)
this means that many water molecules will surround a sucrose molecule

17
Q

explain why water has a high specific heat capacity

A

a lot of energy is required to break the many, stable hydrogen bonds between water molecules and therefore increase their kinetic energy and temperature

18
Q

why is a high specific heat capacity important

A

the temperature of large bodies of water is fairly stable (ideal for aquatic organisms)
the water content of the cytoplasm helps slow the rate of temperature changes (which are due to heat released during metabolic reactions)

19
Q

define latent heat of vaporisation and explain why water has a high latent heat of vaporisation

A

the heat energy required to help molecules break away from each other to become a gas is the latent heat of vaporisation.
a large amount of energy is needed to break the hydrogen bonds for water molecules to evaporate

20
Q

explain the importance of latent heat of vaporisation

A

living things are cooled when water evaporates, e.g sweating in mammals, transpiration in plants
