Variation Flashcards
Organisms in the same species can look different. What is this called?
Differences = variation within a species
Either Genetic variation or Environmental variation
Different [ ] cause genetic variation
Genes
Explain why plants/animals have characteristics that are in some ways similar to their parents
An organisms’ characteristics are determined by the genes inherited fro their parents. These genes are passed on in sex cells (gametes), which the offspring develop from. Most animals and a lot of plants get some genes from the mother and some from the father.
What causes genetic variation?
This combining of genes from 2 parents causes genetic variation - only genetically identical people are identical twins
Some characteristics are determined only by [ ].
Example in plant: [ ]
Example in animal: [ ]
genes
Violet flower colour
Eye colour, blood group and inherited disorders
What is environmental variation?
The environment that an organism lives and grows in causes differences between members of the same species.
Most characteristics are caused by [ ] AND [ ]
Genetic variation
Environmental variation
Name some characteristics that are due to both Genetic variation and Environmental variation
Body weight, height, skin colour etc.
