Asexual Reproduction Flashcards
Asexual reproduction produces [ ] cells
Genetically identical
What is asexual reproduction?
An ordinary cell can make a new cell by dividing in 2. The new cell has exactly the same genetic information as the parent cell.
Why are the offspring of asexual reproduction clones (genetically identical)?
In asexual reproduction there’s only 1 parent. There’s no fusion of gametes, no mixing of chromosomes and no genetic variation between parent and offspring.
Describe the steps of asexual reproduction?
1) X-shaped chromosomes have 2 identical halves
2) So each chromosome splits down the middle…
3) …to form 2 identical sets of ‘half-chromosomes’ A membrane forms around each set
4) …and the DNA replicate itself to form 2 identical cells with complete sets of X-shaped chromosomes
This how all plants and animals grow and produce [ ] cells
