Q

Describe the energy in the producer level of the food chain

A

Green plants and algae use a small percentage of the light energy from the sun to make food during photosynthesis. This energy’s stored in the substances which make up the cells of plants and algae, then works its way through the food chain as animals eat them and each other

Q

What supplies the energy for life processes, including movement? What is most of the energy lost to?

A

Respiration
The surroundings as heat energy, especially in mammals and birds, whose bodies must be kept at a constant temp. which is usually higher than their surroundings

Q

Why do you usually never get food chains with more than 5 trophic levels and why biomass pyramids pyramid shape?

A

So much energy is lost at each stage in the food chain, there’s hardly enough left to support more organisms after 4 or 5 stages
Most of the biomass is lost and so does not become biomass in the next level up
