Q
Name 3 ways white blood cells fight bacteria and viruses
A
White blood cells can engulf foreign cells and consume them
They produce antitoxins that counter toxins produced by invading bacteria
Producing antibodies
4
Q
Explain how Producing antibodies works? (4 steps)
A
- Every invading cell has unique molecules, called antigens, on its surface
- When White blood cells meet a foreign antigen they produce proteins, called antibodies, to lock on and kill the invading cells. Antibodies are specific to their antigen
- Antibodies are rapidly produced and carried around the body to kill all similar bacteria/viruses
- If a person is infected with the same pathogen again the White blood cells rapidly produce antibodies to kill it, the person is naturally immune
