Variables Flashcards
Extraneous variables
-Any variable other than the iv,that may have an effect on the dv if it is not controlled at the start of the study by the researcher.e.g age
-these are described as nuisance variables that do not vary systematically with the iv ,which makes it harder to detect a result
Confounding variable
Any variable other than the iv that may have affected the dv so wee cannot be sure of the true source off changes to the dv e.g personality
-also confounding vary systematically with the iv
Demand characteristics
Any cue from the researcher or from the research situation that may be interpreted by participants as revealing the purpose of the investigation
-this may lead participants to act in a certain way that they think is expected of them to please the researcher or may deliberately underperform to sabotage the results of the study =extraneous variables that may affect the results of a study as the behaviour is no longer natural
