mean, median, mode, range, statistical infrequency Flashcards
mean strength and weakness
+the data is more representative
-the mean can be easily distorted by extreme values
median strength and weakness
+ extreme values do not affect the median value
-it doesn’t take all sets of data into consideration =there less sensitive than the mean=less representative
mode strength and weakness
(best to use when dealing with categories)
+not affected by extreme values
-not representative of the data as a whole
-could be more than one mode
(bi-modal)=two modes
range strengths and weakness
+easy to calculate
+numbers that are close e.g 12,13,14=representative
-only takes into account the two most extreme values.
mean
the average calculated by adding up all the values in a set of data and dividing by the number of values there are
median
the central value in a set data when value are arranged from lowest to highest
mode
the most frequently occurring value
central tendency
the statistical measure that identifies a single value as representative of an entire distribution- the main measures are mean ,median and mode
standard deviation
the single value that tells us how far each score deviates from the mean.
-the larger the standard deviation the greater the dispersion(variation) or spread within a set of data
-a low standard of deviation value reflects the data is tightly clustered around the mean =scores are similar
strength and weakness of standard deviation
s-takes into account all scores = more representative of the general spread of data
w-can be affected by extreme values
