What is a case study
An in-depth investigation,description,and analysis of a single individual,group,institution or event
What type of data does case studys produce?
-qualitative data
When are case studies best use for?
-When investigating unusual/sensitive issues as it would be unethical to use other methods e.g. experiments
Strengths of case studies
-Produces qualitative data= Provides rich detailed insights that May shed light on very unusual forms of behaviour
-High ecological validity
Limitations of case studies
-lacks generalisability= case studies use an ideographic approach= We Cannot apply the findings to Wider society
-The information that makes it into the final report is based on the subjective selection of the researches= the findings may not be a true reflection=low validity
