Aims And Hypotheses Flashcards
Aims
-a general statement made by the research which tells us what they plan on investing and the purpose of the study
Hypothesis
a precise statement which clearly states the relationship between the variables being investigated. The hypothesis can either be non-directional or directional
Directional hypothesis
States the direction of the relationship that will be shown between the variables
Non directional hypothesis
-does not state the direction of the relationship that will be shown between the variables
Example of a directional hypothesis
Participants who sleep for more hours will have higher concentration levels compared to those who sleep for less hours
Example of non directional hypothesis
There will be a difference in concentration level between participants who sleep for more or less hours
When is a directional hypothesis more likely to be used
Tends to be used when there has already been a range of research which relates to the aim of the researcher
-the previous research would suggest a particular outcomeb
When is a non hypothesis appropriate
When there is no previous research which relates or the research is contradictory
