Q: A researcher has created a drug to help treat the symptoms of individuals with depression, the drug is said
to have strong side effects and is advised to only be used on individuals who have chronic depression, i.e.
suicidal thoughts. When putting his research in for statistical testing he uses the 0.05 level of significance,
his research has come back as significant however when his research is submitted for publication it is
rejected as it is believed the research should be tested at a 0.01 level of significance
Question: Explain why this research needs to be tested at a 0.01 level of significance, and why this may
change the outcome of his research (3 marks)
The research must have a stricter level of significance as it is considered controversial, therefore there needs to
be less room for error. The outcome may change as the level of significance has become stricter, this
means there is a higher probability that his research will result in being insignificant
