types of validity Flashcards
validity
refers to the extent to which an observed effect is legitimate=the observed effect is genuine and is representative of wider population.
internal validity
refers to whether the effects observed in an experiment are due to the manipulation of the independent variable and confounding variables
one major threat to internal validty
if participants respond demand characteristics and act in a way that they think is expected of them.
ecological validity
refers to whether the findings from a research study can be generalised to other settings and situations. this is a form of external validity
what effects the ecological validity
lab experiments=uses an artificial setting=causes behave to change as participants may show demand characteristics
mundane realism-the degree to which the materials involved in an experiment are similar to events that occur in the real world.
=if the task used to measure the dv are not ‘like everyday life’ =low mundane realism=lowers ecological validity
