Normal vaccine protocol
Equine influenza (yearly) and tetanus (2 yearly)

What is the natural immunity to equine flu like
Short lived ~a year
Generates virus specific IgA, IgGa and IgGb
What is the vaccine induced immunity like for equine influenza
Short lived (around 6 months)
Only produce IgG(t) response
Variation in ability to stimulate antibody given HA levels
Primary course intervals for equine influenza
2 doses IM 4-6 weeks apart
3rd dose at 6 months
Then yearly (6 months for max protection)
Tetanus vaccine types
Toxoid vaccine
Tetanus antitoxin
Use of the toxoid tetanus vaccine
Standard vaccine (used with EI)
2 IM injections 4-6 weeks apart followed by yearly
Use of tetanus antitoxin
IM injection
Short term protection following injury/in newborn foals
Expensive
EHV1,4 vaccine use
Racehorses and competition horses
-2 doses 4-6 weeks apart with 6 monthly boosters IM
Broodmares
- months 5,7,9 of gestation
Strangles vaccines
Old vaccine
- given in the lip, live vaccine, 6 monthly, had reactions and interfered with elisa
New vaccine (2022)
- 2x IM 4 weeks apart then 6 monthly
Does not interfere with elisa
