Vaccination Protocols Flashcards
Live Vaccines?
Made of weaker versions of problem pathogen
Inactive Vaccines?
Problem pathogen killed and inactivated to not develop into full blown disease, just triggering immune response and teaching body to recognise an attack by profile pathogens
Subunit Vaccines?
One part of pathogen - antigen. Ingredient that triggers immune response by isolating pathogens. Vaccines can prompt specific responses.
Passive Immunity?
Administration of antitoxins containing antibodies against pathogen or toxin. Not long term protection as level of antibodies declines over several weeks.
Active Immunity?
When immune system is exposed to foreign antigens associated with specific infections, if exposed to same disease again the body will be able to neutralise or minimise the threat.
Toxoid?
Toxin that has been treated, chemically or with heat to reduce its pathogenicity
Adjuvant?
Additive to vaccine to increase efficacy and prolong action
Autogenous Vaccine?
Made from animals own cells and prepared in laboratory
Attenuation?
Virulence of pathogen is reduced so that it can’t cause disease but can replicate
Subunit Vaccine?
Contains one component of an organism, can’t cause disease but can replicate
Multivalent Vaccine?
Components of multiple pathogens packaged together
