Reproductive System Flashcards
Species that are spontaneous ovulators?
Dogs and Guinea Pigs
Bitches are?
Spontaneous Ovulators, Monoestrus
Monoestrus?
One oestrus cycle per breeding season
Anoestrus?
No hormones/clinical signs
How long does anoestrus last?
3-9mo (5mo avg)
Pro-oestrus?
Follicles in ovary enlarge and become mature
Signs - vulva enlarges, blood stained mucous discharge.
Dominant Hormone is FSH.
How long does pro-oestrus last?
5-11d (avg 9d)
Oestrus?
Follicles rupture, ova released.
Signs - discharge less blood stained
Dominant Hormone - Oestradiol, LH
How long does oestrus last?
7-10d (avg 9d)
Metoestrus?
Corpus Luteum starts to form at site of ruptured follicle
Signs - discharge decreases, vulva reduced in size
Dominant Hormone - Progesterone
How long does metoestrus last?
5-15d
Dioestrus?
Corpus Luteum established or if ova has been fertilised and pregnancy is established.
Signs - uterine size increased if pregnant, mammary gland development towards end, can cause signs of false pregnancy
Dominant Hormones - Progesterone, Prolactin (if pregnant)
Length of dioestrus?
6-7w
Queens are?
Seasonally polyoestrus, induced ovulators
How many oestrus periods do queens have per year?
2 to 4
