Urinary System Flashcards
What is the main structure of the Urinary Tract?
Kidneys -> Ureters -> Bladder -> Urethra
What are the three main functions of the urinary system?
- Excretion
- Osmoregulation
- Endocrine Gland
What does the endocrine gland do?
Secretes erythropoietin which stimulates bone marrow to produce red blood cells
What does excretion mean?
Removing nitrogenous waste products and excess water from the body
What does osmoregulation mean?
Keeping chemical composition and volume of blood constant by removing excess salts and water
Where are adrenal glands located on the surface of a kidney?
On the cranial surface
What is a ureter?
Moves urine along to the bladder from the kidney.
How long does it take for all of the blood to pass through the kidneys?
five minutes
How does blood enter the kidneys?
Via the Renal Artery
Which part of the kidney has to collect and filtrate?
Nephron
Which part of the kidney is responsible for collecting urine within the kidney?
The Renal Pelvis
How is toxic waste removed from the blood?
Through filtering units, otherwise known as nephrons
Proximal Convoluted Tubule?
Transports filtrate from Bowmans capsule to loop of henle. Absorbs water, Na and Glucose.
Collecting Duct?
Filtrate from nephrons collected here. ADH changes permeability of duct walls.
Distal Convoluted Tubule?
Regulates pH, Ca, K adjusting electrolytes
