Arbiter
Someone who is empowered to settle a dispute OR has ULTIMATE AUTHORITY in a matter.
Sinecure
“sin - UH - cure”
A position or office requiring little or no work and results in profitable returns.
Ethnic Cleansing
The systematic FORCED REMOVAL of
ethnic, racial or religious groups
from a given area,
with the INTENT of making the society
ethnically HOMOGENOUS.
Homogenous = of the same kind.
Pogrom
A violent riot incited with the aim of expelling or killing an ethnic or religious group.
- A mob attack,
- Approved or condoned by authorities,
- Against people or property of a religious, racial, or national minority
Genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group:
- Killing members of the group,
- Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group,
- Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part,
- Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group,
- Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
Genocide
Any one of five acts,
Specified by The UN,
Committed with intent to destroy,
In whole or in part,
A national, ethnical, racial or religious group.
Explain the structure of the word “Genocide”
Greek prefix GENOS meaning race or tribe.
Latin suffix CIDE meaning killing.
Subterfuge
Deceit used in order to achieve one’s goals. Or…
Deception in order to conceal, escape or evade.
Example:
“Both men were in the business of subterfuge and surveillance”.
Annexation
The forcible acquisition of one states territory by another state. Usually following military occupation.
Annexations often take the form of a takeover,
in which a larger and more powerful state exerts control over a smaller territory or nation,
effectively forcing it to join.
For example, the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898 with the goal of expanding control in the Pacific.
Hubris
A personality quality characterised by extreme or excessive pride.
Dangerous overconfidence and arrogance.
Missive
A written communication.
Usually a long or official one.
Example: In his missive, the commissioner outlined his vision for the regions before and after the union.
