Methoxyflurane
Primary emergency indications
For pain relief of moderate - severe pain.
Pt must be able to self administer
Methoxyflurane
Contraindications
a) Head injury or loss of consciousness,
b) Exceeding total dose of 6mL in 24hr period,
c) Renal impairment/failure,
d) Malignant hyperthermia - personal or family history.
Methoxyflurane
Precautions
a) Continuously assess Pt LOC,
b) Concurrent use with Oxytocin may cause hypotension,
c) Pre-eclampsia
Methoxyflurane
Key timings
Analgesic effects starts after 8-10 breaths.
Lasts for approx
3-5min once discontinued.
Oxytocin
Synthetic forms of oxytocin
are used to induce labor in childbirth if it hasn’t started naturally or to strengthen contractions.
(Synthetic) oxytocin is also used to speed up delivery of the placenta (the third stage of labor) and reduce the risk of heavy bleeding (postpartum hemorrhage).
Pre-Eclampsia
Pre-eclampsia is persistent HTN that develops during pregnancy (typically after 20wks) or the postpartum period.
Symptoms that may suggest preeclampsia are headaches, abdo pain, SOB or burning behind the sternum, nausea and vomiting, confusion, anxiety, and/or visual disturbances such as oversensitivity to light, blurred vision, or seeing flashing spots or auras.

Side effects
- Dizziness,
- Headache,
- Amnesia - retrograde*
- Nausea and vomiting,
- Cough,
- Fever,
- Decrease in BP and bradycardia (rare).
- Inability to access memories formed before the onset of amnesia.
