Presentations
a) Metered inhaler pump,
b) Inhalation ampoule-single dose 0.25mg in 1ml,
c) Inhalation ampoule-single dose 0.5mg in 1ml.

Primary Emergency indications
a) Maintenance treatment of bronchospasm associated with asthma and COPD (more likely to take place in hospital setting),
b) Severe respiratory distress associated with bronchospasm,
c) Exacerbation of COPD irrespective of severity.

Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to atropine or its derivatives.

Precautions
a) Paradoxical bronchospasm,
b) Avoid contact with the eyes,
c) Glaucoma.

Onset = 3-5min,
Peak = 1.5-2hrs,
Duration = 6hrs.

Special notes/important interactions
a) Administered as a single use (dose) only,
b) Avoid contact with the eyes,
c) Must be nebulised with salbutamol in NEPT
What it Atropine?
Atropine belongs to a class of medications known as anticholinergics or antimuscarinics.
Atropine works by blocking the actions of a chemical called acetylcholine
(Uh-see-tuhl-co-lean).
It can reverse bradycardia,
Be an antidote to mushroom poisoning and reduce saliva secretion.
What is paradoxical bronchospasm?
Paradoxical bronchospasm is a condition where a medication intended to relieve bronchospasm (bronchodilator’s) instead causes the airways to constrict further, leading to increased difficulty in breathing.
