sympathy towards the British

  • FDR strongly on England side
  • congress passed acts to help Belgium buy France goods
  • FDR couldn’t help because of neutrality acts (gave them 50 WW1 destroyers in exchange for British naval bases)

japan’s actions against China

A
  • Japan invaded Manchuria in China in 1931 breaking Denmark of nations agreement
  • china broke into civil war in 1937 and Japan took advantage
  • The US loaned China $25 million, increased to 250 million 2 years later
  • japan tried to expand beyond China so the US closed Panama canal and banned oil export to Japan in 1940

lend-lease (March 1941)

  • allowed the US to lend arms and supplies to any nation that needed a defense for the defense of America
  • the public still didn’t want to be involved but it was different from WW1 as Nazis were destructive and Britain could call on their history with America for help

conflict in June Atlantic

A
  • roosevelt helping June at sea - 1941 western Atlantic declared the neutral zone
  • german u boats attacked US ships so FDR ordered them to be sunk
  • OCT 1941, US ship sunk 2killing 126 Americans so neutrality acts revoked allowing merchant ships to be armed (lend-lease meant more trade so more chance of boat being sunk)
