- popular for being general at D-DAY
- expressed concerns over big business and military influence
- continued work of Truman even though he’s a republican
what was the highway act?

- interested in autobahn in WW2 - US road system inadequate
- built 41,000 miles of interstate road (now 47,000)

- many conservatives wanted to end ND/FD
- Ike in the middle between laissez faire and complete gov control
- population due to moderation and not undoing democratic work
(wanted to balance budget but only came close once in 8 years)

- increase in illegal immigrants in the 50’s caused deportation of 1.4 million Mexicans
- farmers and businesses complained of reduced living standard)

- first civil rights legislation since reconstruction in 1957
- 1954 Brown v Topeka ended segregation in schools
- sent federal troops to Little Rock in 1957
how did Ike improve economic affairs?
- 22% below poverty line
- tax reductions of $7 billion
- cut spending of TVA by 185 million (couldn’t get rid of it because of south)

how were Ike’s dealings with congress?
- republicans lost control of congress due to defence spending cuts
- still popular in 1956 election eventhough he hadn’t done much
- unpopular in last mid terms due to lack of civil rights, 2nd recession and lack of achievement

what did the Ker mills bill do?
give money to states for health care for elderly
what did the 1958 national defence education act do?
gave 887 million for science and language teaching (to fight communism and win space race)
What was Eisenhower’s recession?
- 1953-57
- cut military spending du to kola ceasefire and new look policy which put 3.7 million out ion work (damage republicans)
- ike left with $20 billion deficit (spent lot on eduction, space, social)
