A
  • Khrushchev whited the west out of Berlin so threatened to give access routes to east Germany
  • In august construction of the Berlin Wall began to intimidate JFK after bay of pigs
  • in October US and USSR tanks faced each other (US backed down but were furious)

What was the significance of the Berlin Wall?

A
  • brought some suability to Germany and Berlin
  • allowed Krushchev to place missiles in Russia
  • soviets though they won because US couldn’t stop them - US thought they won because soviets felt the need to build the wall

  • at the same time a USSR sub believed war had begun so 2/3 leaders authorised launching of nuclear weapons - coolest to nuclear war ever)

  • led to American over confidence like in Vietnam

- relief that crisis was over - closest ever been to nuclear war (shows no one really want it)
