Urine Route Flashcards
What is the route of urine?
Produced by nephrons, drains into minor calyces, joins to become major calyces, unite to form renal pelvis, drains into the ureters, and is then drained into the urinary bladder.
Where are the ureters and what do they do?
Pass under the urinary bladder for several centimeters, causing the bladder to to compress the ureters and thus prevent back flow of urine when pressure builds up in the bladder during urination.
What does the wall of the ureter consist of?
Transitional epithelium on the inside
Smooth muscle in the middle
Outer layer of areolar connective tissue
What is the urinary bladder?
Hollow muscular organ situated in the pelvic cavity behind the pubic symphasis.
Males-directly in front of the rectum
Females- in front of the vagina and below the uterus
Capacity averages 700-800 mL
Three layers
Transitional epithelium in the inside
Muscle in the middle
Peritoneum forms a serous outer coat
What is the urethra?
Terminal portion of the urinary system is a small tube leading from the bladder to the exterior of the body.
I’m females it lies behind the pubic symphsysis and in the front of the wall of the vagina.
Males passes vertically through the prostate and through the penis.
What is around the opening of the urethra that is composed of smooth muscle?
Internal urethral sphincter, involuntary
What is below the internal sphincter?
External urethral sphincter, which is composed of skeletal muscle and is voluntary.
