Nephron Flashcards
What are nephrons?
Functional units of the kidneys, about one million each.
What are the two parts of the nephron?
Renal corpuscle-where blood is filtered
Renal tubule-where glomerular filtrate passes
Fluid moves through renal tubules and waste and excess substances are added and useful materials are retuned to the blood
What two parts make up the renal corpuscle?
Glomerulus
Glomerular capsule (bowman’s)
Where does glomerular filtrate enter and then passes into the he renal tubule?
The capsule
What are the three main sections?
Proximal convoluted tubule
Loop of henle
Distal convoluted tube
What are the basic functions of the nephrons?
Glomerular filtration
Tubular reabsorption
Tubular secretion
What is glomerular filtration?
First step in urine formation
Blood pressure forces water and most solutes in blood plasma across wall of glomerular capillaries
What is tubular reabsorption?
Occurs as filtered fluid flows along the renal tubule and through the collecting duct
Returns about 99% of the filtered water and many useful solutes to the blood flowing through peri tubular capillaries
What is tubular secretion?
Remove substances, such as wastes, drugs, and excess ions, from blood in the peritubular capillaries and transport them into the fluid in the renal tubules
What does FRS stand for?
Filtration
Reabsorption
Secretion
