In men, yes.
It is indicative of infected stones, prostatitis, or chronic urinary retention.
What are some signs and symptoms of acute cystitis?
Frequency
Urgency
Dysuria
Suprapubic discomfort
When do women usually experience hematuria?
Following sexual intercourse
What will UA reveal in acute cystitis?
Pyuria
Bacteiruria
Various degrees of hematuria
When is follow up imaging indicated?
If pyelonephritis, recurrent infections, or anatomic abnormalities are expected.
What antibiotics do you give for women with acute cystitis?
Ciprofloxacin
250 mg every 12 hours by mouth for 3 days
Nitrofurantoin
100mg every 12 hours by mouth for 5-7 days
Trimethropim/Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim) 160mg TMP every 12 hours by mouth for 3 days
What is the analgesic therapy for men with acute cystitis?
Phenazopyridine (pyridium) urinary analgesic 100-200 mg every 8 hours for a max of three days
What type of baths may provide relief as well?
Sitz bath
Who is considered for prophylaxis in concern to UTI?
Women who have more than 3 episodes of cystitis per year.
What are the three most commonly used oral agents?
Trimethroprim-sulfamethoxazole 40/200 mg daily
Nitrofurantoin (macrobid) 100mg
Cephalexin 250mg daily
-single dosing at bedtime or time of intercourse for all three
When is referral to urology indicated?
Suspicion of anatomic abnormality
Evidence of urolithiasis
Recurrent cystitis
