Q

What is the pectoralis major innervated by?

A

The lateral and medial pectoral nerves, derived from the brachial plexus: C5 and C6 clavicular head, C7, C8 and T1 sternocostal head.

Q

What is the arterial supply of the pectoralis major?

A

Pectoral and deltoid branches of the thoracoacromial artery, anterior intercostal arteries, and perforating ranches of internal thoracic artery.

Q

What is the action of the pectoralis major?

A

Adducts and medially rotates humerus, draws scapula anteriorly and inferiorly. The clavicular head flexes the humerus and sternocostal head extends it from the flexed position.

16
Q

What is the subclavius innervated by?

A

Subclavian nerve (C5, C6).

17
Q

What is the arterial supply of the subclavius?

A

Clavicular branch of the thoracoacromial artery.

18
Q

What is the action of the subclavius?

A

Anchors and depresses the clavicle.

19
Q

Where is the serratus anterior?

A

Lateral to the pectoralis muscles in the chest, forms the medial wall of the axilla.

20
Q

What are the proximal attachments of the serratus anterior?

A

External surfaces of the lateral parts of 1st-8th ribs.

21
Q

What is the distal attachment of the serratus anterior?

A

Anterior surface of the medial border of the scapula.

22
Q

What is the serratus anterior innervated by?

A

Long thoracic nerve (C5, C6, C7).

23
Q

What is the arterial supply of the serratus anterior?

A

Laterla thoracic artery.

24
Q

What is the action of the serratus anterior?

A

Protracts the scapula and holds it against the thoracic wall, rotates the scapula.

25
Q

What causes winging of the scapula?

A

Damage to the long thoracic nerve, the nerve that innervates the serratus anterior. This leads to paralysis of the serratus anterior so it no longer holds the scapula against the thoracic wall and pushing the arm causes winging of the scapula.

26
Q

What can cause the damage to the long thoracic nerve that results in winging of the scapula?

A

Trauma to the shoulder, repetitive movements or inflammation of structures pressing on nerve.
