Psychotherapy
treatment for disorders where a persons meets with a trained professional (note: there are many different types of therapies)
Psychoanalysis
Focus on the unconscious mind. Attempt it to identify repressed feelings, memories, or conflicts. Focused on addressing events from the past or childhood.
Behavior Therapy
Type of therapy focused on using conditioning techniques (learning) to change behavior. (effective for substance abuse disorders)
Systematic Desensitization
A behavior therapy where a patient is slowly introduced (step by step) to an anxiety causing stimuli. (a way to treat phobias or OCD)
Ex. A person afraid of water may first be exposed to a few drops, then a bowl, then a faucet, then a shower, etc)
Aversive Conditioning
Conditioning where a person associates a negative outcome with a previously positive stimulus
ex. For alcoholics, a therapist might put a toxin in alcohol that makes a person sick, the person will then stop drinking alcohol
Cognitive Therapy
Therapy that is focused on changing a persons thought process or response to events
- useful for Depression
Client-Centered Therapy
A humanistic therapy where a patient is the main focus. A therapist will treat each patient differently to address their needs. The goal is for a person to reach self-actualization.
Active Listening
a tool used in humanistic therapies where a therapist might repeat words or phrases that a patient says to demonstrate empathy and attention
Humanistic Therapy
Therapy that is focused on helping the patient cope with the present. The goal is to reach self-actualization.
Token Economy
A behavior technique where a patient is rewarded with “tokens” that can be used to access other benefits
Ex. merit/demerit system, AA coins
Psychopharmacology
Using medication (drugs) to treat disorders
Anti-psychotic drugs
Drugs that treat schizophrenia
- Block Dopamine
Antidepressants
Drugs used to treat depression
- operate as SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
- INCREASE SEROTONIN
Anti-anxiety drugs
Drugs used to treat anxiety (or anxiety related disorders)
- Ex. Xanax
Tardive Dyskinesia
A side-effect of anti-psychotic drugs. A person loses muscle control of their face and tongue
