Self-Efficacy
Our beliefs about our abilities
- People with a high self-efficacy can accomplish more because they believe they have the ability to
Ego
Consciousness- Our reality principle- physical body interacting with the world
Id
Pleasure principle- The part of our brain that wants to fulfil our desires even if it is not socially acceptable (devil on your shoulder)
Superego
Our internalized morals and beliefs we use to make a decision (the angel on our shoulder)
Denial
When people refuse to acknowledge reality
Ex. Johnny is such a good kid, he would never cheat on a test.
Displacement
When we take out our emotions on a less threatening person or object
Ex. Johnny’s parents grounded him, he then went and yelled at his younger sister
Ex. Johnny was frustrated so he slammed his door
Projection
When we attribute our negative personality traits onto someone else
Ex. Johnny (the school gossiper) gets mad a Jasmine by saying, don’t tell her anything, she will tell all your secrets.
Rationalization
When we try to logically explain our bad behavior (usually to brush it off)
Ex. Johnny (an alcoholic) says I only drink to hang out with my friends
Reaction Formation
When we act the opposite of how we feel
Ex. Johnny is attracted to Jasmine, he trips her in the hallway and makes fun of her
Regression
When someone returns to a younger stage
Ex. Johnny was frustrated, so he threw a temper tantrum
Repression
When someone pushes away something that causes stress
Ex. Johnny forgot that he had a math exam today
Sublimation
When we take our negative feelings and apply them to a socially approved ACTIVITY
Ex. Johnny is a very angry person, so he joined the football team.
Psychoanalysis
Freud’s Theory of personality; behavior is caused by our unconscious mind
Rorschach Inkblot Test
Test designed to explore unconscious, Patients discuss what they see in various inkblots
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
projective test, a person is asked to tell a story about an ambiguous image or scene
Trait Perspective
Characteristics can describe our personality
Extraversion
Personality trait where we are more outgoing and like being in large groups of people- the opposite of Introversion
Conscientiousness
Personality trait where we are dependable and organized
Neuroticism
Personality trait that describes our emotional stability
- High neuroticism- more emotional and empathetic
- Low neuroticism- less emotional, more stable
Openness
Personality trait that describes a person’s willingness to try new things
Agreeableness
Personality trait that describes flexibility and willingness to get along with others
Unconditional Positive Regard
The idea that a person is loved no matter what. Regardless of feelings attitudes or beliefs.
- Used in Humanistic therapy
Collectivism
a society where people work together for a common goal
Individualism
a mindset driven by personal achievement (even at the detriment of others)
Personality
Patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behavior
