Unit 3B- Intelligence/Testing Flashcards
Reliability
The tendency for a test to get consistent results
Ex. You take the ACT and score a 25, you take it again and score a 25 (or close), It is a reliable test
Validity
The concept that an exam tests exactly what it is supposed to
Ex. AP Psychology exam tests knowledge of psychology, not calculus
Content Validity
a test examines the appropriate subject matter it is supposed to (used for achievement tests)
Ex. in math, your test has math on it, not biology.
Predictive Validity
a test is able to predict what it claims to predict (used for aptitude tests)
Ex. ACT says higher scores perform better in college. If higher scores actually do better than lower scores, it has predictive validity.
Fluid Intelligence
The ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges (higher for younger people)
Crystallized Intelligence
Memory of events, facts, and details. Higher in older people
Spearman’s g
The idea of a general intelligence. People who are intelligent in one factor are intelligent in others.
Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory
There are 8 intelligences that people fall into:
- Musical
- Lingustic -language
- Logical-Mathematical
- Kinesthetic- bodily movement (athletes)
- Spatial- awareness of space- artists
- Interpersonal- understanding others
- Intrapersonal- understanding self
- Naturalistic- understanding nature
Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory
There are three multiple intelligences
- Creative- art, music, etc
- Analytical- math, reasoning, problem solving
- Practical- real world applications- interpersonal, naturalistic, etc.
Emotional Intelligence
Understanding emotions of self and others
Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
A measure of how intelligent a person is relative to the average
IQ = (Mental Age/Actual Age) * 100
Ex. A child with a mental age of 12 and an actual age of 10 would have an IQ of 120
Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS)
An intelligence test that uses BOTH verbal and non-verbal (hands-on) techniques to measure intelligence
Achievement test
Test measures how much you know about a subject
Ex. Psychology tests
Aptitude Test
Test designed to predict future performance
Ex. ACT predicts college performance
