Unit 6.1 Flashcards
What is the structure of Hydroxyl?
-OH, Found in alcohols, Polar.
What is the structure of Carbonyl?
-COH or -CO-, Found in aldehydes and ketones, Polar
What is the structure of Carboxyl?
-COOH, Found in acids, Negetively charged
What is the structure of Amino?
-NH2, Found in bases, Positively charged
What is the structure of Sulfhydryl?
-SH, Found in rubber, Slighty polar
What is the structure of Phosphate?
-PO4, Found in ATP, Very negative charge
What is the structure of Methyl?
-CH3, Nonpolar
What is the definition of isomer?
Molecules with same molecular formula but different structures
What is the definition of monomer?
The bases that are put together to make polymers
What is the definition of polymer?
These are formed when monomers join together
What happens during a dehydration synthesis reaction?
This is when one monomer donates an OH and another donates an H which are put together to form a water molecule. The two remaining monomers are combined to form a polymer.
What happens during a hydrolosis reaction?
This is when a water molecule is added and breaks apart into H and OH and breaks the polymer apart into two separate monomers.
Explain why carbon is a versatile building block for organic molecules?
It has many unique properties to form many different bonds with other molecules. It is also able to be broken up and reformed differently, which gives it flexibility.
What is the relationship between monomers, polymers, dehydration synthesis, and hydrolysis?
So monomers are the building blocks which are put together to form polymers, but how to make polymers is through dehydration synthesis. Then to go from polymers back to monomers you use hydrolysis.
