Unit 1.2 Flashcards
What are the five main different types of measurements?
Length, Mass, Volume, Time, and Temperature
What do you measure length in?
Meters
What do you measure mass in?
Kilograms
What do you measure volume in?
Liters
What do you measure time in?
Seconds
What do you measure temperature in?
Celcius or Kelvin
What’s the symbol for meters?
m
What’s the symbol for kilograms?
kg
What’s the symbol for liters?
L
What’s the symbol for seconds?
s
What’s the symbol for Kelvin?
K
What’s 1,000 base units?
Kilo
What’s 1/1,000 of a base unit?
Milli
What’s 1/1,000,000,000 of a base unit?
Nano
What 3 main topics can be used to define data?
Mean/Average, Median, and Mode
How many milligrams are in one gram?
100 grams
What is length?
Length is the measurement of a line and the standard unit is the meter.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of matter in a given object.
What is volume?
Volume is the space a given object occupies.
What formula do you use to find volume?
Height x Width x Depth
How many milliliters are there in 1.7 liters?
1,700 mL
What is the boundary between the fluid and air called in a graduated cylinder?
Meniscus
Should you read the measurement to the highest or lowest part of the meniscus?
Always read to the lowest
What is temperature?
Temperature is the degree of hot or cold an object is. It is also the average kinetic energy of molecules.
What instruments are used to measure temperature?
Thermometers
What is the formula for Fahrenheit?
(C) (9/5) + 32
What is the formula for Celsius?
(F - 32) (5/9)
What is the formula for Kelvin?
C + 273
Above zero degrees, the actual number of degrees Celsius is higher or lower than Fahrenheit degrees?
It’s lower
What is Standard Deviation?
Standard Deviation is a measure that is used to quantify the amount of variation in a set of data.
If the standard deviation is close to 0 what does that mean?
It means that the data tends to be very close to the mean.
What is variance?
Variance is how far away the data point is from the mean?
How do you calculate variance?
You take the difference between the data point and the mean, square it, and then average the result.
What term describes allowing the viewer to make predictions within recorded data?
Interpolotion
What is it called when you allow the viewer to make predictions about data not yet recorded?
Extrapolotion
What are the five main types of graphs?
Direct, Indirect, Constant, Best Fit Curved, and Best Fit Peak.
What axis does the independent variable go on?
X-axis
What axis does the dependent variable go on?
Y-axis
True or false? Length is measured in liters
False
True or false? Nano units are bigger than mili units
False
If I were to measure how long a road was would I use meters or kilometers?
Kilometers
If you were finding standard deviation what would you do first?
Find the mean of the data points
How do you find mode?
The number that appears the most
How do you find median?
Line the numbers up from least to greatest and find the middle value
How do you find the range?
You take the largest value minus the smallest value
How do you find the average?
You add all the values together then divide the total by the amount of values you have.
How many digits do you need when using a 10cm ruler?
Just the one’s place
How many digits do you need when your using a 1cm ruler?
One decimal place
How many digits do you need when using a 0.1cm ruler?
Two decimal places
