Unit 6 Transcription 2/11/2025 Flashcards
What are the 3 parts of transcription?
Initiation, elongation, termination
What’s initation?
The RNAP binds to the promoter and opens up the DNA strand
What’s elongation?
The RNAP moves along the template strand making RNA along the DNA in by adding RNA nucleotides the 5’-3’ direction, and moving in the 3’-5’ direction. While moving, it zips up ten DNA behind it it already used
What’s termination?
When the RNAP reaches the end of the strand it leaves the strand and the newly made pre-mRNA also leaves
What happens after termination?
The pre-mRNA has its introns taken out, and gains a methyl cap and poly-A tail
Why does pre-mRNA have its introns taken out?
They do not contain genetic information
Why does pre-mRNA gain a methyl cap?
So it can create a nuclear pore and leave the nucleus
Why does pre-mRNA gain a poly-A tail?
So exonuclease targets that instead of the genetic information of the mRNA (conserves the genetic information)
What codon does pre-mRNA start with?
AUG
