Unit 6: Concept 3 - Evidence of Evolution Flashcards
What is paleontology?
study of pre-historic life through fossil record
What are fossils?
preserved remains of organisms
What are transitional fossils?
link ancestral species to their descendants
What is morphology?
study of form of living things
What are homologous structures?
similar structures that suggest evidence of common ancestry (divergent)
What are vestigial structures?
structures with little/no functions to the organism (divergent)
What are analogous structures?
similar structures that evolved independently in different organisms due to serving similar purposes (convergent)
What is biogeography?
study of geographic distribution of plants/animals
What are endemic species?
species that exist only in 1 geographic region
What is embryology?
study of embryo development
What is biochemistry?
study of chemical processes in living things
What is direct observation?
microevolution directly observed due to short life cycles that reproduce quickly
