Unit 5: Concept 1 - Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
What is a gene?
Section of DNA that has instructions for proteins
What is an allele?
Different versions of the same gene
What are homologous chromosomes?
Matching chromosomes from mom/dad
Who was Gregor Mendel?
Used pea plants to learn about genetics
What were the 3 laws of inheritance?
Law of dominance, segregation, independent assortment
What are three things Mendel include in his experiments?
Control over breeding, only used pure-bred plants, observed “either-or” traits
What is purebred?
organism whose ancestors are genetically uniform
What is a cross?
mating of 2 organisms
What does homozygous mean?
2 of same alleles (AA or aa)
What does heterozygous mean?
2 different alleles (Aa)
What is the law of dominance?
dominant alleles express over recessive
What is the law of segregation?
gametes will receive 1 chromosomes per pair after meiosis
What is the law of independent assortment?
1 trait doesn’t affect another trait
What is a punnett square?
diagram for finding traits from parents with certain genes
What is a monohybrid cross?
cross between 2 organisms for 1 trait
