Unit 5 Lesson 8: Character Developemnt Flashcards
What is characterization
The process by which authors reveal a character’s traits and motivations is called characterization.
What are narrative techniques
the devices and methods an author uses to craft a story
What are the purposes of narrative techqiues
The process by which authors reveal a character’s traits and motivations is called characterization. Authors employ a variety of narrative techniques to carry out the process.
What is direct characterization
Direct characterization is explicit―the author tells readers what a character is like, either through statements by the narrator, a character’s self-description, or another character’s description of that character.
What is indirect chararcterization
. In indirect characterization, the character’s traits are implied, thus readers must infer them from clues in the text. These clues include how the character speaks, dresses, or acts; what the character thinks; and how other characters react to the character.
What can diologue convey
Dialogue can be used to convey information both directly and indirectly.
What is foil
a character who brings another character’s qualities into sharp focus
What are the circumstances of foil
The foil usually has characteristics that are the opposite of the other character, which helps bring the other character’s qualities into sharp focus.
How do direct and indirect characterization differ?
In direct characterization, the author reveals what a character is like by explicitly telling the reader through the narration, a character’s self-description, or a description by another character. In indirect characterization, the reader must infer what a character is like from context clues, such as how the character speaks, dresses, or acts; what the character thinks; and how other characters react to the character.
Why does an author make a character a foil?
An author makes a character a foil to highlight the qualities of another character. A foil generally has the opposite qualities of the character for whom they are a foil.
what are comlpex chararters
a character with multiple qualities, traits, and motivations
What do complex chararters add to the plt
Such characters have well-developed personalities and clear reasons for their actions. Because complex characters are multidimensional, they add realism to stories as they interact with one another, create conflict, and drive the plot forward.
Complex chararters are also
round characters
roun
Why aew complex chararters round chararters
Complex characters are also round characters because the author includes details in their characterizations that help readers understand who they are, what they think, and why they do what they do.

a character with a fully developed personality who comes into conflict with other characters in believable ways
