Q

Evaluate how effective this sentence would be in a news story: A local man was robbed last night as he waited at the bus stop.

A

The sentence is appropriately written. It references two actions—a robbery and waiting for the bus. The verb was robbed is in passive voice, probably because it is unknown who the robber was. The verb was robbed is in passive voice because the subject—a local man—received the action, and the person who performed the action—the robber—is unknown. Waited is in active voice because the local man performed the action of waiting for the bus.

17
Q

In writing, there are two types of voice—the active voice and the passive voice. They are easily identified by the way their verbs are formed. Look at these two sentences:
* Mila bought the tacos.

  • The tacos were bought by Mila.
A

In the first sentence, Mila is the subject, bought is the verb, and tacos is the object. In the second sentence, the tacos is the subject and were bought is the verb. There is no object in the passive voice because the understood object―in this case, the tacos―is now in the subject position. Notice that the passive verb includes a past form of be―were―and the past participle―bought.

A

  • when the source of an action is unimportant

  • when a writer wants to emphasize an action over who did the action
