What is another reason why active voice is more commonly used than passive voice?
The active voice may be more commonly used because it is punchier and more direct. It helps create a livelier voice.
Key difference between active voice and passive voice
In the active voice, the grammatical subject performs the action. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action.
What is another differnce between passive and Active voice
Another difference is how the verbs in each sentence are formed. In the passive voice, the verb includes a form of the verb to be plus the past participle of another verb. For example: The opening speech was given by the mayor.
Writers may use active voice…
- to write clear, concise sentences: The home team won 2–0.
- to emphasize who is responsible for something: The manager doesn’t allow her employees to make personal calls at work.
Writers may use passive voice…
- to emphasize an action: The house was built in 1946.
- when the subject of an action is unknown: Our neighbor’s car was stolen last night.
- to avoid responsibility: Some dishes were broken when we moved.
- to tell about rules or laws: Dogs are not allowed in the park.
As you access and evaluate other texts, think about how writers use active voice and passive voice. Ask yourself these questions:
- Which voice does the writer use?
- How does the voice affect the meaning in the text?
- Why might the writer have chosen that voice?
What can the subject of a sentence tell you about whether the sentence is in active or passive voice?
If the subject of the sentence performs the action named by the verb, the sentence is in active voice. If the subject receives the action of the verb, the sentence is in passive voice.
In which voice is the verb formed by joining a form of to be with the past participle of another verb? Give an example sentence.
