Commanding Officer Responsibilities
of pregnant service women
- Assures that the pregnant servicewoman retains a high degree of commitment to fulfill professional responsibilities
- Ensure no preferential treatment shall be given because of pregnancy status
- Not harassed
Counseling requirements
OPNAVINST 6000.1 series

- Requests for separation not normally granted/approved
Work reassignment
Determination made after consulting with health care provider and occupational health professional, which may include complete reassignment or specific restrictions
PRT’s for pregnant service women
Exempt from regular PRT during pregnancy and 6 month following Con leave
chemical, toxic or environmental hazards
No exposure
standing at parade rest or attention
NO longer than 15 minutes
Exempt from immz except ?
- Annual Flu
- TD
- Diphtheria
- Tdap

ionizing radiation dose should ne exceed?
0.5 REM during entire period of gestation
Specific limitations
During the last 3 months of pregnancy, 28 weeks and beyond, shall be:
- Allowed to rest 20 minutes every 4 hours
- Limited to a 40 hour work week (over 7 days, not 5) including watch standing
- May request waiver through CO and OB provider if desire to waive time restriction
Eligible for overseas transfer if:
- MBR has not reached 28th week
- Adequate OB facilities are available
- Does not intend to place infant for adoption
- Base/alternate housing available
Eligible for CONUS transfer
- Without restrictions (no flight after 28th week)
- Operational commands should contact COMNAVPERSCOM for reassignment immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy;
- Nonoperational shore commands that will be within 12 months of members PRD shall contact PERS to facilitate PRD extension
Pregnancies existing prior to entry into initial training
discharged without maternity benefits; can apply for reenlistment 4 months postpartum
Shipboard assignments
- Can remain on ship until 20th week of pregnancy while in port and MEDEVAC is less than 6 hours
- if deployed should be transferred IMMEDIATELY upon confirmation
- Cannot remain on ship after 20th week and not return to ship board duty until 12 months postpartum
Aviation squadrons
- Considered disqualifying
- Post delivery convalescent leave of 12 weeks must be granted by the CO
- Assignments to deployable squadrons will be changed to shore squadrons after the 20th week prior to squadron deployment
Reporting or assigned as a student:
Handled on a case by case basis
- Consideration made for course content and pregnancy limitations
Becomes pregnant during training
- Determine ability to complete training
- If disenrollment is required, determine when training can be terminated in order for member to reenter the training at a later date without repeating previously completed portions of training
Billeting
authorize movement from barracks to civilian community
Performance evaluations
CO’s shall ensure pregnant servicewomen are not adversely evaluated or receive adverse fitness reports
Uniform
maternity uniform is mandatory for all pregnant women in the Navy when a uniform is prescribed and regular uniforms no longer fit
Maternity care after separation
- Tricare, nor the VA has authority to pay civilian maternity care expenses for pregnant women who separate
- The Uniformed Services Voluntary Insurance Policy (90 day) medical insurance policy available to separating service women will cover pregnancy
- Former service women who separate under honorable conditions can receive maternity care up to 6 weeks following delivery in armed forces MTF’s on a space available basis
Convalescent leave
Post delivery con-leave of 12 weeks (84 days) will normally be granted by the servicewoman’s CO
Breast Feeding
- CO’s must ensure availability of private, clean room (not a toilet space) with access to running water for hand washing and pump cleaning
IDC Responsibilities to pregnant service women
- Upon confirmation of the pregnancy, provide written notification to the CO
- Provide guidance on work restrictions
- Monitor health of the pregnant servicewoman
Light duty
- light duty status with subsequent assignment to SIQ prior to hospitalization for delivery
- May be recommended any time a HCP determines it is necessary
Past history of multi-problem pregnancy, bleeding or threatened abortions, the IDC has the following alternatives for placement of pregnant servicewoman:
- Quarters- OB status
- Medical holding company
- Admission to an MTF
- Limited duty board
Termination of pregnancy
DOD funds are not available for elective termination of pregnancy except where the life of the mother would be endangered
Abortions at civilian facilities
- Will be used at her own expense
- When must be admitted, leave will be used at her expense
- Subsequent treatment or hospitalization will be managed as any other illness or disability
Pregnant brig prisoners
- conform to OPNAVINST 6000.1D except that con-leave cannot be authorized
- Pregnancy does not preclude confinement as long as prenatal care is provided and there is an MTF near the brig to provide labor, delivery, and the management of the OB emergencies
