Instruction that governs Suitability Screening
BUMEDINST 1300.2
STATE the purpose of the Suitability Screening Program
Determines suitability for overseas, remote or operational assignments by identifying “special needs”
Designation based on non-availability of frequently used health care within a reasonable travel time
(Remote Duty)
Reasonable travel time is 2 hours of one way surface travel
Remote Duty Assignments
Alaska: Kodiak
California: Bridgeport, San Clemente Island, San Nicolas Island
Florida: Key West
Hawaii: Barking Sands
Nevada: Fallon (special immunizations for kids)
West Virginia: Sugar Grove
Examples of “Special Needs
Medical or Dental: Chronic condition Any condition requiring services beyond a primary care provider Mental health Developmental or educational Adaptive equipment Assistive technology devices or services Wheelchair accessibility

Responsibilities of Officials
Unit COs of the transferring command own the screening process and make the suitability determination
Military Treatment Facility (MTF)
Performs medical/dental/educational screening
Provides a suitability recommendation to transferring command
BUMED
Prescribe procedures for medical, dental, and educational screening
Monitor the execution of screening procedures
Determine the cause and institute corrective action for screening deficiencies
Family Members require screening when
Orders authorize an accompanied tour
Member is serving an unaccompanied tour of 24 months or more
Joining a service member already at an overseas/remote duty assignment
**Each family member must be enrolled in DEERS
Suitability Screening Coordinator (SSC) Responsibilities
Designated by MTF commander
Coordinates suitability screening process
Performs paperwork review/preliminary screening
Refers to MTF/DTF staff for screenings
Forwards suitability inquiry to gaining MTF
Provides recommendation to transferring command
As required, coordinates to NAVPERSCOM, PSD, HRO, etc…
Suitability Screening Process
Service member receives orders (30-day clock begins)
Transferring command or PSD schedules SM/FM for screenings
Transferring command concurrently conducts a “command review”
SSC forwards suitability inquiry to gaining MTF
MTF/DTF staff conducts screening and exams as required and completes NAVMED 1300/1 part I&II
SSC forwards suitability inquiry to gaining MTF
Gaining MTF assesses local resources and replies to screening MTF w/I 7 working days
MTF CO/OIC provides recommendations to transferring command on NAVPERS 1300/16 part II
Transferring command makes suitability determination on NAVPERS 1300/16 part I (30-day clock ends)
Required Information for service member
Copy of orders Demographic info for each FM Routine exams, screenings and immunizations Hearing and vision exams HIV, G6PD and sickle cell tests Blood type and DNA Copies of civilian medical, dental, or mental health records or summaries Current medical history (DD form 2807-1)
For family members
Military health record
Copies of civilian medical, dental or mental health records or summaries
Current medical history (DD form 2807-1)
Current immunizations
For infants and toddlers
Copy of the current individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP)
If available, copies of developmental assessments or evaluations
