Unit 3: Parts of the Eye Flashcards
Lens
The transparent structure behind the pupil that changes shape to help focus images on the retina. (called accommodation)
Retina
The back of the eye that contains receptive rods and cones, as well as neurons that send messages to the brain
Rods
Detect white, black, and grey. Necessary for peripheral and twilight vision
Cones
Detect colors and details. Function in the daylight and well-lit conditions
Fovera
The central focus point in the retina, where all the cones cluster
Bipolar cells
Neurons that connect the rods and cones with ganglion cells
Ganglion cells
Connect to the bipolar cells and bundle to form the optic nerve
Blind spot
The point where the optic nerve leaves the eye, creating a “blind” spot because there are no receptor cells there
Cornea
Protects the eye
Pupil
The black part in the iris, allows light to enter
Iris
Colored part of the eye, opens and closes to allow light in
