Unit 3- Lesson 6: The Origin of Evil Flashcards
What is moral evil?
Evil caused by the direct actions of people.
What is natural evil?
Evil beyond human control.
Christian views on the Origin of Evil- Why can evil happen?
Christians believe in the Privation Of Good- Evil is not a thing, it is just the lack of something being good. So evil happens because at that point there was no good happening.
They also believe that Life is a test – Evil happens to us to make sure that we are worthy of entering heaven. An example of this is the story of Job: he lost everything/everyone he loved and still turned to God.
Christian views on the Origin of Evil- What is the original sin?
The story of Adam & Eve eating the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.
Some Christians believe that when Adam & Eve ate the
forbidden fruit they brought suffering into this world – before
this act of disobedience evil & suffering did not exist.
Christian views on soul making- What does St Irenaeus argue? What quote backs this up?
He argues that for humans to make meaningful free
choices they must be able to choose evil.
This does mean that God is partially responsible for Evil’s
existence. But he intends for humans to have free will to test them.
‘God made mankind in his own image’
Muslim views on the Origin of Evil- Why does evil exist? Find a quote to support this.
Evil exists because it is part of Al-Qadr (Allah’s plan for humans) and we
should not question Allah.
Life is a test – The Qur’an teaches that humans will be tested in
this life to see if they are worthy of entering Jannah.
‘Do people think they will be left alone after saying ‘We believe’
without being put to the test?’
Muslim views on the Origin of Evil- Can good come from evil?
Good can come from evil – People show the best of themselves by
helping others in need or by choosing the straight path when faced
with evil.
An example could be forgiving someone who has attacked you.
Muslim views on the Origin of Evil- Who is Shaytan? Find a quote.
Shaytan is a jinn who tempted Adam into disobeying Allah.
Shaytan goes against the wishes of Allah, refusing to bow to Adam
& still tempts humans today.
‘who refused and was arrogant: he was disobedient’
