What was prison like 150 years ago and what are religious and non-religious views on it?
150 years ago, prisons focused on retribution (the act of retributing or paying back for past good or evil) so they mixed all ages and genders together.
This caused spread of disease, violence and rife.
In these modern times, both religious and non-religious believers disagree with these prisons and understand that prisoners are still humans who deserve basic living standards.
Who was Elizabeth Fry and what did she do?
In the UK many people contributed to prison reform – but one of
the most important figures was Elizabeth Fry. She campaigned to end the practices of sending prisoners to Australia & capital punishment. This means she believed in reformation.
Fry was a Quaker Christian so she believed in the quote ‘You are all one in Christ.’
What is a Prison chaplain?
Prison Chaplains offer spiritual & emotional support for
inmates. And ensures they get their human needs an lead holy book study & religious services in prisons.
Christian views on prison Chaplains- Why are Christians inspired to become chaplains (a member of the clergy or other religious group attached to a private institution, such as a prison, school, hospital etc.) from the story of the parable of the sheep & goats?
The story of the parable of the sheep and goats is about how Jesus’s sheep obeyed him. Contrastingly, his goats strayed away from him.
This story shows Christians that they should be sheep and help the Prisoners because ‘You are all one in Christ.’

treated fairly.
They ensure that prisoners are provided with halal food, prayer
mats & literature to practice their faith.
Muslim prison Chaplains provide counselling, spiritual
guidance & support when a prisoner is released.
