Unit 3: 17.3 Flashcards
Hematopoiesis
When stem cells that come from bone marrow differentiate into different kinds of blood cells and circulate in body
Granulocytes
Leukocytes that are categorized
Neutrophils (PMNs)
Eliminate/destroy extra cellular bacteria
-have a nucleus with 3-5 lobes and lilac granules
Eosinophils
- Have fewer lobes in the nucleus, reddish orange
- protect against protozoa and Helminth
Basophils
Absorb methylene blue and acts as anaphylatoxins
Mast cells
Similar to basophils but mast cells can leave circulating blood and are found in tissues
Agranulocytes
Lack visible granules in cytoplasm
Natural killer cells (NK cells)
Destroy abnormal cells
- MHC are found on healthy cells, NK don’t destroy these cells
- if no MHC marker on cell NK will destroy it
Monocytes
Lathes white blood cells that have a nucleus, no granules, no lobes
- helps fight infections by eating pathogens
Macrophages and dendritic cells
Monocytes that differentiate
