UNIT 2- Sac 1 Definitions Flashcards
Sensation
Detecting and responding to sensory information that stimulates sensory receptors
Transduction
Converting incoming sensory information into a form which can travel along neural pathways to the brain
Camouflage
Hidden or disguised presence of a person, animal or object
Visual illusion
perceptual misinterpretation of real sensory information
Perceptual set
predisposition to perceive something in accordance with what we expect
Size constancy
Recognising that an objects actual size remains the same, even though the size of the image it casts on the retina changes
Interpretation
incoming sensory information is given meaning so that it can be understood
Visual perception
Occurs through visual sensory system which consists of network of physiological structures involved in vision
Taste perception
limited to the five senses. our experience of taste builds the experience of flavour too
Flavour perception
Builds on taste perception by combining it with other perceptual experiences
Brightness constancy
Tendency to perceive an object as maintaining its level of brightness, despite changes in the amount of light being reflected from the object to the retina
Shape constancy
Tendency to perceive an object as maintaining its shape despite any change in shape of the image of the object on the retina.
